Richard, and his charming English accent, first came to the US as a teenager, and lived in MD. Returning to England for his college education, Richard settled in the US permanently in 1979, working first in California, then New York. Thirteen years ago, Richard moved to Raleigh with his wife and two boys.
Reedman and Associates' (R&A) business caters to seniors, and is threefold. Forty percent of the work is accounting and tax services for individuals and small-to-medium business owners. Fraud, which seniors are particularly susceptible to, comprises twenty percent of the business.
The remaining forty percent, and the fastest growing segment, is tax representation, and utilizes Richard's unique certification as a US Tax Court Practitioner. Richard represents his clients who have complex tax issues in federal court, an experience that can be "extremely intimidating."
Richard is a member of an elite group. Since 1943, less than 260 people have been certified as practitioners, a span of seventy years.
R&A's business is growing because seniors need help with taxes and fraud. "Not only is their population as a whole increasing, but seniors are living longer as well. Their money has to go further. Combine this with a troubled economy where seniors are still working and now paying taxes on their social security earnings. More seniors than ever simply need our services."
The two-second life change? Eight years ago Richard was in a horrific car accident and almost died. He was in a coma for ten days and intensive care for another three weeks. Richard looks at life differently now. He knows he was lucky to survive, and he understands how unprepared we are for devastating events.
Richard made a conscious choice to give back, and changed the focus of his business to assisting seniors, for whom he has great respect. He values his affiliation with the SRA, and has mutually benefitted from working with Jim Trull, financial planner; Greg Wallace, elder care lawyer; and Lance Canada, reverse mortgage specialist.
